The Do's & Don'ts of Preparing Wood Furniture for Storage

Oct 21, 2022

Whether you are moving or just need to keep some furniture in long-term storage, storing wood furniture can seem daunting since you don’t want the wood to get damaged. However, taking a few steps to pack it away correctly will ensure that your wood furniture stays safe no matter how long you need it to stay in a unit. Keep reading to learn some guidelines for preparing wood furniture for long-term storage.

Do:

Take everything apart as much as possible.

Start by cleaning the furniture well. Putting it in storage dirty will result in scratches or damage later. Once it is clean, take apart the furniture as much as possible to break it down into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to pack everything into the unit and lower the risk of something breaking.

Be careful not to strip screws or splinter the wood when removing table legs from their tops or dismantling similar pieces. Also, keep the hardware in labeled plastic zip-close baggies so you don't lose any screws and can remember which table or chair they belong to.

Completely wrap each item.

Wrap each piece well so that it is protected from dings and dents while moving. Old sheets, dropcloths, and blankets are the best items to use for wrapping and draping over wood furniture. Avoid using anything plastic that can seal in moisture and rot or warp the wood over time. Even upholstered pieces with wooden frames should be wrapped so they don't get snagged or stained.

Don’t:

Cram too much inside.

As you pack up the storage unit, place the largest items in the back and the smaller boxes up front. That way, you can more easily navigate through your items and find what you need later. It's also less likely that you'll need to remove the large pieces as often. Don’t cram too much inside the storage unit since this is an easy way to overcrowd and break something.

Put furniture directly on the floor.

Instead of putting furniture directly on the floor inside the unit, use pallets or cinder blocks to raise the furniture up a few inches. You can also use cardboard or dropcloths to create a layer of protection between the wood furniture and the flooring. This is useful in the rare case of dampness or rainwater infiltrating the unit; your furniture will be safe from water damage.
